PORT ANGELES — Serious competition that doesn’t take itself too seriously, the Port Angeles Senior Games, opens tonight.
On the deadly earnest side, 243 athletes 50 years old and older will contend in events ranging from bowling to javelin and high jump.
On a literal lighter note, they’ll be welcomed in opening ceremonies by the city Senior Center’s ukulele band.
“It’s just so exciting,” said D Bellamente, director of the Port Angeles Senior Center, on Wednesday. She heads the games, now headed into their fourth year.
This year’s games will include a new event, weightlifting, that will begin with check-in at noon Saturday at Fast Stop Fitness, 902 E. First St.
It also will debut a demonstration sport — rowing — on ergonometers linked to a large-screen TV at the senior center, 328 E. Seventh St.
