Sequim 17-year-old hurt in Diamond Point wreck

DIAMOND POINT — A 17-year-old Sequim resident was listed in serious condition Saturday at a Seattle hospital after driving his car into a tree on U.S. Highway 101 near Diamond Point on Friday evening.

Tyler C. Shafer was eastbound on Highway 101 about eight miles east of Sequim in Jefferson County about 5:30 p.m. when his 2009 Toyota Corolla 4D left the road to the right and hit a tree, the State Patrol said.

The tree crushed the car on the driver’s side door, the State Patrol said.

Shafer suffered serious injuries, troopers said, and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

No one else was in the car.

The cause of Shafrer’s loss of control of the car remained under investigation.

Shafer was wearing a seat belt, the State Patrol, which added that no drugs or alcohol were apparently involved in the wreck.

The car was destroyed, the patrol said, and was towed from the scene.
