SEQUIM — The City Council heard final testimony Monday night on appeals challenging construction of a Wal-Mart “superstore” at Sequim’s western entrance.
The meeting was again held in the Guy Cole Convention Center, where close to 300 members of the public showed up June 23 at the first round of Wal-Mart appeals.
About 60 attended Monday’s hearing, which was expected to last several hours. It was continuing at press time.
Three parties — Clallam County, the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe and citizens group Sequim First — have appealed Wal-Mart’s preliminary approval by city Planning Director Dennis Lefevre.
They also have challenged Lefevre’s blessing of Sequim Village Marketplace, a regional shopping center to be anchored by The Home Depot home improvement warehouse outlet and possibly an Albertsons supermarket.
Wal-Mart and the Marketplace are slated to be built across Washington Street from each other near the intersection of River Road.
Monday night’s hearing was to have centered on an appeal filed jointly by Sequim resident Judy Larson and Sequim First.
That appeal challenges Lefevre’s approval of a site construction permit for grading 30 acres at the proposed Wal-Mart site.
