Sequim-area residents concerned about possible aquifer contamination turned out Monday to object to a proposal to deepen a gravel pit on Kirner Road.
Clallam County Road Engineer Steve Hauff explained the status of the gravel pit project during a meeting of the county commissioners in Port Angeles.
Hauff said the county is planning to deepen the pit to within 15 feet of an aquifer in the area. The problem is that — in this drought year — no one knows for sure at what depth the aquifer is located.
The county has retained consultant Jay Peterson, of Port Angeles-based Four Seasons Engineering, to study the effects of deepening the pit, which is also used as a storage area for scrap material such as asphalt, culverts, bridge components, creosote-treated timbers, rip-rap, stumps and trees, and fluids used in equipment, Hauff said.
