Sequim: Burned firefighter out of intensive care; wife buoyed by authors

SEQUIM — Lisa McAneny, wife of a Sequim volunteer firefighter severely burned in late February, is seldom at a loss for words.

But an act of kindness by strangers — victims of the terrorist attacks on New York City — left her nearly speechless Tuesday morning.

Her husband, Mike, 38, suffered burns to the arms and legs when a plastic can of gasoline exploded Feb. 16 while he was trying to light a fire in his yard at 441 S. Second Ave.

Since then, life for Mrs. McAneny has centered around watching her husband at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle fight his injuries through three surgeries.

She keeps a journal of the events, often e-mailing messages to family and friends to update them on her husband’s condition.

Her mood was more upbeat Tuesday for a number of reasons:

Mike McAneny had been moved from intensive care to a room on 8 East at Harborview.

Over Easter some friends gave her the book, Love, Greg & Lauren, a journal of e-mails written by the husband of a woman who had been burned on almost 85 percent of her body during the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

Mrs. McAneny said the book on the author’s wife’s remarkable recovery gave her a great deal of inspiration. She e-mailed Greg and Lauren Manning to thank them for sharing their story.

On Tuesday morning a small teddy bear and some balloons were sitting on the table next to McAneny’s bed. The Mannings had sent them.
