SEQUIM — The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce will announce the 2011 Citizen of the Year at a luncheon Tuesday.
The three finalists are Dick Hughes, Sequim Education Foundation president; Cynthia Martin, Parenting Matters Foundation president; and Donna Tidrick, Sequim Community Aid president.
One of the community volunteers will be named Citizen of the Year while the other two each will receive a Community Service Award at the chamber luncheon at 11:45 a.m. at the SunLand Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive in Sequim.
Reservations for luncheon must be made by Monday.
The buffet will cost $20, while only coffee or tea will be offered for $3.
All members of the community are invited to attend.
A committee of previous recipients selected the top three finalists from a pool of Sequim citizens who were nominated by members of the community, Shelli Robb-Kahler, chamber executive director, said in a statement.
Volunteer service
“Finalists are chosen based on their history of outstanding volunteer service to the Sequim community,” she said.
Hughes was nominated for “his persistent dedication and involvement in the Sequim Education Foundation and the numerous programs SEF produces,” Robb-Kahler said.
Hughes also is active in Sequim Noon Rotary, Sequim Wolf Pack Youth Football, the Sequim Middle School Interact Club and the Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic, as well as other volunteer efforts.
Cynthia Martin, who holds a doctorate, is recognized for “her tireless advocacy of early childhood education,” Robb-Kahler said.
As well as serving as president of the Parenting Matters Foundation, which oversees the First Teacher program, she is involved in Prevention Works, the Clallam County Literary Council and United Way of Clallam County.
She was one of four recipients of the Clallam County Community Service Award in 2002.
Tidrick has given 29 years of service to Sequim Community Aid, which relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance for rent and utilities to residents of the Sequim School District and also collects Christmas toys for needy children.
Robb-Kahler noted Tidrick’s “tireless effort to secure contributions and donations to fund the help this organization gives to the residents of Sequim.”
