SEQUIM — A new citywide taxing district has squeaked by in a 3-2 vote by the City Council.
Ken Hays, Erik Erichsen and Mayor Laura Dubois, all of whom were elected to the council in November, approved establishing a transportation benefit district that could reap $600,000 in new sales-tax revenue next year.
That money would be used to fix old roads and sidewalks and put in new ones, thus making a dent in the $24 million in transportation projects the city hopes for from 2009 through 2014.
Longtime Councilmen Walt Schubert and Bill Huizinga voted against forming the district at Monday’s night’s council meeting, saying the people of Sequim shouldn’t have to cope with yet another tax hike.
