SEQUIM — When Children’s Park opened Wednesday at Sequim Community School, six-year-old Grace Kirsch didn’t care about the four inches of snow covering the ground.
Dressed warmly in a snowsuit, big mittens and a huge smile, Grace tried out each park amenity built specifically for special-needs children.
She didn’t care about the speeches being made by dignitaries huddled under a nearby awning. She was more interested in playing in the park she’s sure was built just for her.
The idea of a park for special-needs children sprouted four years ago.
“This is a park that began with an idea and no money,” said Cynthia Martin, who helped spearhead the project.
Martin works for the Parenting Matters Foundation and the Sequim School District’s First Teacher Program.
