SEQUIM — It’s going to be at least two more weeks before the City Council decides the fate of a property rezoning that could lead to a regional shopping center.
With anti-mall pickets carrying signs inside and outside the council’s meeting room and only four council members sitting at the table, Mayor Walt Schubert encouraged delaying a decision on rezoning 21 acres owned by Bell Homestead LLC.
“I don’t feel comfortable deciding this,” Schubert said.
Councilman John Beitzel wasn’t at Monday’s meeting because of illness, and Councilwoman Patricia Kasovia-Schmitt is on vacation.
Councilman Paul McHugh, a real estate broker, excused himself before discussion of the rezone application started, saying he has a potential conflict of interest because he represents potential buyers and sellers of property zoned for commercial use.
