Sequim councilman to resign next month

SEQUIM — City Councilman Don Hall told city officials Wednesday that he will resign from the council effective Nov. 27.

Hall, who turns 81 in January, said his health is the main reason for his decision to resign.

“I’m 80 years old and not feeling as well as I used to,” Hall said Wednesday.

“So it’s just time.”

Hall was appointed to the City Council on June 5, 2002, to fill a seat vacated by Bill Thomas, who had resigned, and was elected to the post in November 2009, beginning his term in January 2010.

‘Just a great guy’

Sequim Mayor Ken Hays said Hall consistently has been a strong voice for the community on the council.

“He’s just a great guy,” Hays said.

“I’m going to miss him on the council.”

Hays said Hall suggested that his spot might be better taken by one of the qualified candidates not appointed to the spot filled by Dennis Smith, who was sworn in Tuesday.

Hall moved to Sequim from Rhode Island in 1997 with wife, June, who died two years ago.

Hall had worked as a quality assurance manager for 40 years.

He served on the Sequim Parks and Recreation Board and Planning Commission before taking a seat on the City Council.

Hall said he is most proud of his work in securing softball fields at Carrie Blake Park and his involvement in establishing the Sequim Off-Leash Dog Park.

“I just enjoy finding projects and working on them and getting them done,” Hall said.

With his work on the council coming to an end, Hall said he’ll most likely still be a regular presence at the city’s Parks and Recreation Board meetings.

He said he has been going to those meetings for about 10 years and has no plans to stop now.

Applications for the position, which pays $150 per month, are available at Sequim City Hall, 152 W. Cedar St.; by phoning 360-683-4139; or online at www.sequimwa.gov.

Due Nov. 16

The deadline for submitting completed applications at the City Clerk’s Office is 4 p.m. Nov. 16.

Council members will begin interviews for an appointment to the position, the current term for which ends Dec. 31, 2013, on Dec. 10 at 5 p.m. at the council’s regularly scheduled meeting at the Sequim Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St.

Applicants must be registered voters living within the Sequim city limit, have a one-year continuous period of residence in the city and hold no other public office or employment under the city government.
