SEQUIM — Police Chief Ken Burge doesn’t want to the city to rejoin the countywide drug task force if it can’t make more than a short-term commitment.
Burge, who became police chief Oct. 1, has met with Clallam County Sheriff’s Department officials about the possibility of city officers rejoining Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team.
Former Chief Byron C. Nelson pulled the city’s officer off the task force shortly after becoming chief in 1996, citing differences of philosophy.
The drug task force, according to Sheriff Joe Hawe, focuses on mid-level to upper-level dealers as required under federal grants it receives.
But Nelson said the task force was having little impact in getting drugs off Sequim streets.
