SEQUIM — A major face lift is about to transform streets in much of the downtown core as city officials finish plans for a long-awaited $3.8 million revitalization project to begin early next month.
For Public Works Director Jim Bay, the project represents a pot of gold at the proverbial rainbow’s end.
“I hate to say this — I mean, it sounds funny — but it really is a dream come true,” Bay said.
The dream wraps up four years of planning a project coveted by cities throughout the nation which chase after federal dollars handed out to rejuvenate downtown shopping areas.
The project, dubbed the “Rev Grant” by city staff and council members who fought for it, coincides with a handful of other city projects that are critical to the downtown area, Bay said.
It will consist of a full revamping of Washington Street from Sunnyside Avenue to the east and Fifth Avenue to the west, and some portions of Bell and Cedar Streets in the same area.
As with other details of the mega-project, those will be ironed out in the days to come, said Bay.
