SEQUIM — A city proud of its wandering elk herd now can boast of its attractive, symbolic signs welcoming passing motorists.
“We wanted to put up something that represented the elk herd that keeps wandering down onto the highway,”‘ Public Works Director James Bay said Wednesday.
As a phase in the ongoing beautification project along the U.S. Highway 101 bypass, the city has placed towering “Sequim Welcomes You” signs at each end of the city’s main thoroughfare.
Each sign features the silhouette of an elk, standing 16 feet high on a concrete and rock base.
The steel elk, cut and welded by Oliver Strong of Olympic Topiary, were hoisted into position on their stands early this week by A.J. Webb Construction of Sequim.
The project is a joint project of the city of the Sequim and the state Department of Transportation.
