SEQUIM — Those interested in becoming volunteer firefighters have until Oct. 26 to fill out an interest card for the next Sequim fire department’s volunteer fire academy.
Interest cards can be filled out from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at Clallam County Fire District No. 3’s headquarters at 323 N. Fifth Ave. in Sequim.
The volunteer fire academy would extend from early January through March, said Capt. S. Chinn, who is in charge of volunteer recruitment.
The three-month training academy teaches all aspects of firefighting and ends with the students fighting a live fire.
The district comprises more than 40 career firefighters and more than 60 volunteers who respond from home to stations throughout east Clallam County and Gardner in Jefferson County.
The process of becoming a volunteer begins with an orientation, a physical abilities test and an interview with the district officers, as well as a medical exam, Chinn said.
Academy next step
Those who pass the admissions process attend the academy, held two weeknights and Saturdays.
After passing the academy, each volunteer is assigned to a station and is mentored during a probationary period.
The district also has volunteer opportunities for civilians certified as emergency medical technicians who may not be interested in firefighting.
