SEQUIM — Four New Dungeness Lighthouse Society members have been safely transported from the lighthouse after a breach opened in the Dungeness Spit.
High winds and pounding surf last week breached the spit in three places.
“They were never stranded,” said Jack Gamboe, manager of transportation of the New Dungeness Light Station. “They came out on the regular keeper exchange at about midnight or so (Saturday), which is low tide.”
The lighthouse is located near the end of the spit that juts into the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Gamboe said during a breach, people at the lighthouse are technically stranded, but there are ways to retrieve the lighthouse keepers by boat, helicopter or all-terrain vehicles.
Marle Brandt of Sequim, was staying at the lighthouse last week while the sand spit was breached.
“We were never in any danger,” Brandt said. “If there was a serious problem, we could have been removed at any time.
“They used a (Chevrolet) Suburban to drive us out at our normally scheduled time.”
