SEQUIM — People who live or do business in Sequim or within the city’s urban growth boundary can apply to be on a committee that will advise city leaders on a proposed new City Hall.
People on the committee will represent different organizational and industry segments in the community, gathering and sharing input on where a new City Hall should be located, how it should be designed and what amenities should be available.
The need for more municipal space has been apparent for some time.
Currently, city administration, planning and public works offices are stuffed into two aging buildings on West Cedar Street next door to an unusable former fire hall.
The Police Department works out of leased space in a shopping center on West Washington.
A new building would allow city offices to be consolidated into one building and could also provide space for expansion as the city continues to grow.
Preliminary estimates put the needed space in a new building at 20,000 square feet.
City Council members have expressed support for placing a new City Hall in the Water Reuse Demonstration site next to Carrie Blake Park, but there’s also been negative feedback to the idea of moving City Hall away from downtown Sequim.
City leaders have promised that the public will have a say in planning for a new City Hall.
