SEQUIM –– A Sequim man was arrested after allegedly trying to set his mother’s SunLand home on fire.
Kevin T. Root, 44, was booked Friday into Clallam County jail for investigation of first-degree attempted arson and second-degree reckless endangerment after allegedly pouring gasoline in the basement of the home he shares with his mother, Marjorie Root, at 247 Taylor Blvd. in the SunLand community north of Sequim.
Clallam sheriff’s deputies responded to a call from Marjorie Root saying her son had sprinkled gasoline in the basement and was attempting to set paper on fire, according to Deputy Todd Yarnes.
Fire and EMS crews were called to the scene, Yarnes said, because of the danger of fire and the strong gas fumes from the basement.
Yarnes said Kevin Root has a history of mental health issues and likely would undergo a psychiatric evaluation in jail. He remained in jail Saturday.
