SEQUIM — Mayor Walt Schubert was listed in satisfactory condition in Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center on Monday, a day after being injured in a motorcycle accident on state Highway 112 near Jim Creek.
Schubert’s wife, Sherry, said her husband had been in surgery Monday and that the operation went well.
He is expected to stay in the hospital another three to five days.
City Councilwoman Patricia Kasovia-Schmitt said prior to Monday night’s City Council meeting that doctors installed a plate in Schubert’s pelvis and screws in his back, and that other fractures are still being evaluated.
But there is no paralysis, Kasovia-Schmitt reported.
Sherry Schubert said a Washington State Patrol report of facial injuries was inaccurate. A superficial wound to the face was caused by the hasty removal of Schubert’s helmet, she said.
Riding his Harley
Schubert, a longtime motorcycle rider, was heading west on Highway 112 shortly before noon Sunday on a 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
While negotiating a left curve about 33 miles west of U.S. Highway 101, he reportedly lost control of the bike and went off the road to the right, where he crashed.
The State Patrol report listed the cause of the accident as “speed too fast for conditions.”
Sherry Schubert, however, said that her husband was only traveling 25 mph.
“He’s not exactly sure why he lost control of it,” she said. “It was just a simple, kind-of-freaky kind of accident.”
