SEQUIM — An ad hoc committee is recommending all commercial projects of more than 20,000 square feet be required to meet minimum design standards.
The City Council met with the committee Wednesday to discuss design standards.
Under the proposal, projects of more than 20,000 square feet — including those under one roof or in multiple buildings — would have to meet standards officials say will keep the city’s small-town feeling intact.
Councilman Paul McHugh, a real estate broker who represented the developer planning a 395,000-square-foot shopping center on West Washington Street, questioned why smaller buildings combined in a project should be held to the same standards as “big box” stores.
Councilman Ron Farquhar answered, saying:
“We want a certain look for Sequim, not a theme, but a feeling.”
