Sequim: Nine-hour hearing on shopping center yields far smaller audience than city officials expected

SEQUIM — A City Council session Wednesday on a large shopping center project proved to be as lengthy as expected.

But attendance at the nine-hour event fell far short of the masses anticipated by city staff.

About 30 people showed up for the meeting, which combined an appeals hearing and a land-use hearing on a proposed regional shopping center — including a Home Depot home improvement warehouse outlet — on the city’s west side.

Three parties have appealed the city’s preliminary approval of Sequim Village Marketplace, which also is slated to anchor a grocery store and other retail stores.

Phoenix-based AVB Development Partners is seeking approval to build the 395,000-square-foot complex on 42 acres near the intersection of Washington Street and River Road.

“We really appreciate your patience,” Mayor Walt Schubert said to members of the audience who sat through nearly six hours of an appeals procedure before having the chance to speak to the council near the end of the marathon event in the Community Center.

Wednesday’s marathon followed by two days six hours of appeals testimony over a proposed Wal-Mart “superstore” slated for a 39-acre parcel directly across Washington Street from the Marketplace site.
