SEQUIM — City officials are proposing a $26.1 million budget for fiscal 2002, an increase of $6 million over the current budget.
Although the proposed increase constitutes nearly a 30 percent hike, city officials say residents should only expect a 1 percent increase in the property tax rate.
That’s because most of the proposed $6 million increase — which is due to several large-scale street projects — will be covered by grants and matching funds set aside in recent years, officials said.
The Downtown Revitalization Project, the reconstruction of North Sequim Avenue, and the Spruce Street project will cost approximately $5.3 million in capital outlay money in 2002, City Clerk/Treasurer Lonna Muirhead said Friday.
While proposed road expenditures account for most of the budget increase, other proposed general fund expenses total $3.7 million, down from $3.9 million in 2001, Muirhead said.
