SEQUIM — A 65-page plan to “rediscover” and “reinvigorate” the town center while creating a “main street atmosphere” is being considered by the Planning Department for implementation this year.
“These public improvement plans will be starting very soon,” Planning Director Rich Hendricksen said. “In the next couple of years, we’ll be seeing a lot of construction and improvement.”
The first draft shows possible downtown enhancements such as parking lots in alleys, walkways through the town center and developing “gateways” marking the entrances to the town center with signs and landscaping.
The goal of the plan is to improve traffic circulation, ease congestion on Washington Street and make the area a nicer place for tourists and window shoppers to walk using more planters, landscaping and outdoor furniture, Hendricksen said.
The plan is designed to implement city policies already in place and would be funded by a $4 million State grant, city documents show.
