Sequim: Rare snow invades the fabled rain shadow

SEQUIM — Students were given a rare snow day Monday after a sudden storm made many roads nearly impassable until later in the day.

Barring unforecast heavy snowfall Monday night, Sequim schools were expected to reopen for classes this morning, according to Joyce Davis, Sequim School District transportation supervisor.

“I was up at about 3:30 a.m. (Monday), checking roads and we decided there was just too much snow that needed to be plowed on the side roads,” Davis said.

Davis, who lives southwest of Sequim, said about 10 inches of snow accumulated at her home.

“It sure is beautiful as long as I don’t have to drive in it,” Davis said with a laugh.

The storm began mid-afternoon Sunday and the ground was quickly blanketed. The amount of falling snow lessened during the evening and early morning hours.

The snowstorm left the Sequim-Dungeness Valley looking more like Aspen, Colo., than the site of the well-known “Blue Hole” moniker.
