SEQUIM — When Steve Windust and his brother retrieved landing gear from an Army Air Corps P-38 that crashed on Maynard Peak in 1943, they didn’t realize they were violating federal law.
Neither did U.S. Forest Service authorities who oversee management of the Quilcene Ranger District where Maynard Peak is located.
Recently, Quilcene District Ranger David Craig, Forest Service officials in Olympia and the PDN, which published a story about Windust’s find, have received e-mails from aircraft archaeologists pointing out federal law regarding crashed airplanes.
