SEQUIM — A local inventor has devised a way to eliminate confused reactions when outsiders try to spell or pronounce the city’s name.
“I’m just dropping the ‘e’ and I’ve been doing it for the past five years,” 74-year-old Clint Jones said Saturday. “I’m sure that any newcomer here would certainly approve it.”
Jones, the inventor of the Dandy Digger weeding tool, believes the “e” causes unnecessary confusion for people who can’t spell or pronounce the name.
The six-year Sequim resident said he will circulate a petition to gauge interest in changing the name to “Squim,” though the current spelling hasn’t stopped Jones.
His house insurance, patent application and even his bank checks say “Squim” is his hometown.
Orders and payments for Dandy Diggers arrive at Jones’ Evans Road home addressed “Squim,” without problem, as long as the ZIP code is correct, Jones said.
