SEQUIM — Diving will remain a competitive sport for girls at the high school level after the School Board voted Monday to override an administrative decision that could have disbanded the team.
The unanimous vote came at the close of a hearing to consider a grievance filed by parents of three divers concerned about the viability of their children’s teams.
But the board stopped short of making a permanent change to a coaching allocation schedule — which sets a coach-athlete ratio — choosing instead to take up the issue at a future meeting.
The decision Monday also left in limbo the boys’ diving team, which competes with the boys’ swim team in the winter.
Superintendent Garn Christensen informed athletes and parents in mid-September that the allocation schedule adopted by the board in August would preclude hiring a second coach for the combination swim-dive team because of an insufficient number of athletes.
Based on data collected by Christensen and athletic director Chris Orson, the board set a formula for determining how many athletes each sports team should have before assigning to it one or more coaches.
For some sports, an insufficient turnout would eliminate the program.
