SEQUIM — Nicole Derung is a 3-year-old like many others, coveting a collection of plastic jewelry and stickers with Pokemon, Barbie and SpongeBob themes.
Her recently developed fixation on hats includes a navy blue baseball cap sporting an American eagle.
Nicole’s 5-year-old sister, Michelle, has an equally impressive stash of pop-culture relics. The soon-to-be kindergartner, however, is busy learning her ABCs and the Pledge of Allegiance.
But for these all-American girls, both born and raised on the North Olympic Peninsula, life is about to take a drastic turn.
On Friday, they will fly to Switzerland with their parents, Beat and Susanne Derung, who are facing deportation by the U.S. government.
“We’re sad. We’re really, really sad,” Beat Derung said. “We just don’t know what we did wrong.”
