If you thought cloudy skies dampening your July Fourth fireworks display was disappointing, consider that Sequim teacher Brian Berg’s weekend plans were foiled by 80 mph winds and eight inches of snow.
Berg is a member of a climbing group attempting to summit North America’s highest peak, Alaska’s 20,300-foot Mount McKinley, led by escorts from Alpine Ascents.
In dispatches posted on the Web site mountainzone.com, the group, calling itself Group 10 Da Fine Dieter, chronicled its attempt to summit the mountain during weather that the escorts described as the worst they had seen.
The group’s dispatches begin June 28 from the 14,000-foot level of the mountain also called Denali. They moved up to 14,200 feet on June 30. They remained there for the past week, pinned down by bad weather that still shows no signs of letting up.
