Sequim woman hears ‘come on down!’ on hit TV show

SEQUIM — Hyped-up music. A roaring crowd. And then the words she had hoped for “Gloria Tweter . . . come on down!”

Gloria and her husband, Joe Tweter — who have spent all of their 70 years on the North Olympic Peninsula —traveled to Palm Springs for a vacation to visit longtime friend Jane Walker.

They decided to watch the taping of “The Price is Right” in Los Angeles on Feb. 20.

The episode — featuring Gloria winning $4,199 in prizes — will be broadcast on CBS next Monday at 10 a.m.

Before the taping, the couple, Walker and another friend, Sis Tuttle, had spent 4½ hours waiting, doing paperwork, proving their identities and doing interviews with crew members.

“There was no way Joe and I were going to drive in Los Angeles traffic, so Jane took us,” Gloria said.

The Tweters have lived in Sequim for about 25 years, and before that Port Angeles for their whole lives.

Gloria — who was the sixth contestant called down that day — tried to wear a Sequim Irrigation Festival T-shirt onto the show, but producers told her that shirts cannot have advertising on them.

“When I heard that, I thought about trying to find one that had some saying on it,” she said.

“If I had been able to find a shop where I could have something written on it I thought something like —’Hello, Drew. My name is Gloria. Carey me down!’ — would be cute.”

Drew Carey is the third emcee of the show, which first began in 1956 and went to its current, time-honored format on CBS in 1972.

Carey took over for the retired host, Bob Barker, last October.
