AGNEW — Dogs will be herding sheep at the annual Shepherd’s Festival on Monday.

The free festival will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sequim Prairie Grange’s Macleay Hall, 290 MacLeay Road (roughly, between Port Angeles and Sequim), with lamb kabobs, lamb chili and arts and crafts for sale.

One organizer said the festival has been an annual event for close to 30 years.

“We don’t really know exactly when it started,” said Cyndie Stumbaugh, a sheep rancher who co-leads the Lamb Chops 4-H Club and works with the club’s youngsters to put on a petting zoo at the festival.

The event is sponsored by the North Olympic Shuttle and Spindle Guild and the Olympic Peninsula Fiber Growers Association.

Guild members will demonstrate fiber-spinning and will talk about weaving with fiber, Stumbaugh said.

At noon Monday, Becky Northhaven, who trains border collies, will put on a sheep-herding demonstration with her dogs, which encircle sheep and keep them under control.

This year for the first time, besides sheep shearing, Mikey Moore will shear llamas, Stumbaugh said.

Pygmy goats, baby chicks and bunnies also will be available for kid contact at the petting zoo, and a newborn lamb will be exhibited.
