PORT TOWNSEND – Gudrun Jensen, once homeless in the City of Dreams, has had a dream come true.
Jensen, 78, has moved into subsidized housing at the Admiralty Apartments uptown on Taylor Street.
Jensen’s rusting Volvo station wagon – her sleeping place long parked on Fredrickson Street in a Port Townsend industrial park – was towed away and junked more than a week ago, the towing company taking it at no charge.
The vehicle was Jensen’s only shelter for much of the past eight years, say close friends.
She has many friends and acquaintances to thank for her new living arrangements, said Mary Hewitt, who in January brought the Peninsula Daily News‘ attention to Jensen’s plight.
Hewitt was concerned that Jensen had dementia after the woman disappeared for two weeks during a rare November snowstorm.
She resurfaced disoriented, malnourished and exhausted – and suffering from hypothermia.
Those brutal days are behind Jensen now.
