The aging Hood Canal Bridge drawspan stuck open for nearly an hour early Monday, blocking traffic in both directions until crews could get the floating bridge back together.
A mechanical malfunction was blamed for the inability to close the span after it was opened to allow marine traffic to pass around 5 a.m. The state Department of Transportation announced that the bridge was back to normal at 6:22 a.m.
The retracting span separating the bridge halves occasionally gets stuck in the open position. A 2007 east-half replacement project includes a new drawspan as well as straightening the road “bulge.”‘
