SHINE — Fred Hill Materials Inc. officials expect to file paperwork this week in a preliminary step to redesignate more than 6,200 acres from forestland to mineral area.
Officials for the Poulsbo-based company said this is the first step in their effort to build a four-mile conveyor belt to and from a marine pier into the Hood Canal.
The system, which has drawn fire from some area residents, would connect the company’s gravel pit to the canal.
The paperwork is expected to be filed Wednesday in Jefferson County.
