SHINE — A plan to build a four-mile conveyer belt and marine pier to transport gravel in Shine drew concern from area residents at a meeting Wednesday night.
More than 75 people turned out at a forum sponsored by Fred Hill Materials Inc., which is planning to build an extensive pier near Thorndyke Bay on Hood Canal.
The 1,100-foot pier and conveyer belt would be used to load gravel onto barges as part of a plan by the Poulsbo-based company to significantly expand mining operations at the Shine Pit.
Residents said they had serious questions about noise, traffic, environmental impacts, drops in property value and other issues if the plan goes forward.
Company officials said the meeting was intended for residents to get an initial ideas of its plans.
Lars Sikes, who lives two parcels down from where the pier would be built, voiced concerned about noise.
“We’re concerned about noise,” he said. “You’re going to have rocks banging onto a barge.”
