PORT ANGELES — Ever since a 500-yard outdoor shooting range near Salt Creek Recreation Area was shut down in 1968, Don Roberts has been trying to get a new one built on the North Olympic Peninsula.
After many false starts, Roberts — president of the Pacific Northwest Shooting Park Association — is now hopeful that his efforts will be realized finally.
On Monday, Clallam County commissioners hosted a workshop meeting with officials from the state Department of Natural Resources.
The commissioners identified Sadie Creek property about 25 miles west of Port Angeles as a potential site for which to issue a reconveyance application.
The land is currently managed by DNR, which could potentially transfer part of the property to the county for use as the shooting range.
If the county does apply for a land transfer and a myriad of required permits are approved, the county could approve construction of a shooting center on the 35 acres.
