Shopping, benefits, treks scheduled this weekend

Holiday bazaars and festivals dominate the offerings across the North Olympic Peninsula this week.

But there are also benefits, hikes, plays and lectures for those looking for entertaining ways to spend their time.

PORT ANGELES

Derby Dolls benefit

PORT ANGELES — The Port Scandalous Derby Dolls roller derby team will host a benefit pancake breakfast at the Eagles lodge, 110 S. Penn St., from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The menu includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, coffee and juice.

Cost is $5 per person and $3 for kids 10 and younger.

Items have been donated for the meal by Jose’s Famous Salsa, First Street Haven and Bada Bing Bada Bloom.

Proceeds will benefit The Answer For Youth outreach program and the Derby Dolls team.

Two festivals

PORT ANGELES — Two Queen of Angels holiday bazaars are planned this weekend.

The Queen of Angels Catholic Church will hold an Angelic Festival at its gym, 209 W. 11th St., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday.

The festival will include wreaths, a toy room, handicrafts, a kids’ corner, white elephants, religious articles and Nativities, a country store bakery, a farmers market and decorated Christmas trees.

Entertainment will be provided. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The Queen of Angels Parish will host its ninth annual Fair Trade Goods Sale during the church’s Angelic Festival.

The Fair Trade Goods Sale will be in the Parish Hall at 213 W. 11th St. today through Sunday.

The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

The international handcrafts and food items include chocolate, teas, nuts, coffee, ceramics, baskets, jewelry, seasonal decor, carved wooden and stone goods and musical instruments.

Catalogs also will be available to place special orders for arrival in time for Christmas.

The sale helps small-scale producers build better lives for their families around the world.

It is held in partnership with SERRV International, a nonprofit organization trying to eradicate poverty by providing opportunity and support to artisans and farmers worldwide.

Veterans forum

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula Community Mental Health Center and the Disabled American Veterans will present a free fall community forum on “Challenges for Returning Veterans and Their Families” today.

The forum will be from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Clallam County Veterans Center, 216 S. Francis St..

Peninsula Community Mental Health social workers Robert Perry and Katijean Thorpse will speak.

Science, cinema

PORT ANGELES — The Washington State University Extension Clallam County Beach Watchers program will host “Science and Cinema” in Room 160 of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.

During the first part of the event, Beach Watchers will sort microplastic samples from Hollywood Beach and Salt Creek, which the Port Townsend Marine Science Center will use to help understand the North Olympic Peninsula’s plastic pollution problem.

After the sorting is complete, the BBC “Planet Earth” documentary “Shallow Seas” will be screened.

Desserts and popcorn will be served.

Boutique craft sale

PORT ANGELES — The annual Holiday Boutique Craft Sale will be held at the Camp Fire Clubhouse, 619 E. Fourth St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The event will include quilted items, fabric purses, fused glass, jewelry and baby items.

Zen retreat set

PORT ANGELES — NO Sangha will hold a zazenkai, a one-day zen retreat, at Murre Cottage, 420 W. Third St., from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

NO Sangha is a Zen community that has been based in Port Angeles for more than 14 years,

Alternated zazen (seated meditation), kinhin (walking meditation) and private, individual instruction are available.

There will be silent coffee-tea breaks, and a vegetarian soup and bread lunch will be offered.

A sutra (chanting) service will be held at 10 a.m.

Sensei Kristen Larson, a teacher in the Diamond Sangha Teachers Circle, will give a dharma talk on Case No. 7 in the Wu-Men Kuan koan collection, “Chau-chou: Wash Your Bowls,” at 1 p.m.

AGNEW — The Agnew Helpful Neighbors Club will hold a holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Genealogical talk

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Genealogical Society Treasurer Virginia Majewski will present “Using Our Library’s On-Line Resources: Footnotes.com, American Ancestors.com and World Vital Records.com” on Saturday.

The free event, which is open to the public, will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the First Presbyterian Church Parish Hall, 139 W. Eighth St.

Majewski will provide an overview of what kinds of records are contained in each online database and will teach how to navigate them to get the best possible search results.

She holds certificates in American records and general methodology from the National Institute of Genealogical Studies at the University of Toronto.

Majewski also received a Society Management award from the Washington State Genealogical Society, for which she is vice president.

Scandinavian meal, crafts

PORT ANGELES — Sons of Norway Olympic Lodge No. 37 will hold a traditional lutefisk dinner with all the trimmings on Saturday.

The meal will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E. Lopez Ave.

Meatballs also will be served.

The event also have a lefsa and dessert table offering Scandinavian dishes.

Tickets are $17 for adults; $8 for youths younger than 11.

At the same event, Women Into Scandinavian Heritage will hold an exhibit and sale of Scandinavian folk art, including Hardanger embroidery, weaving and rosemaling.

Holiday bazaar

SEQUIM — St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 101 E. Maple St., will host a holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday.

The event will include arts and crafts, baked goods, a boutique and a silent auction.

Pie and coffee will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Trail work party

SEQUIM — The Peninsula Trails Coalition will hold a work party to plant trees and shrubs at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Participants should bring work gloves and a shovel.

Workers will meet at the Dungeness River Center office at the park.

Play benefits hospice

SEQUIM — Readers Theater Plus will perform Jan Karon’s “Welcome to Mitford” as a benefit for Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County at the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, in Sequim this weekend.

The play will be held today and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $12 each, or two for $20, and are available at Pacific Mist Books, 121 W. Washington St. in Sequim, and, in Port Angeles, at Odyssey Bookshop, 114 W. Front St., and at the Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County office, 540 E. Eighth St.

“Welcome to Mitford” is a portrayal of the life journeys of Tim Kavanagh, a much-loved bachelor rector of a church in a small mountain community.

He has encounters with eccentric members of his congregation and town jokers, helps shelter an unruly orphaned teenager, falls in love and gets married.

Volkswalk Sequim Bay

SEQUIM — The Olympic Peninsula Explorers Volkssport Club will walk along country roads and the Olympic Discovery Trail near Sequim Bay on Saturday.

The group will leave the Sequim QFC parking lot at 9:15 a.m.

There are options for walks of 7.4 miles or 4.3 miles, with the longer walk reaching John Wayne Marina.

The walk is open to the public.

SEQUIM — The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald will be discussed at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 3 p.m. Saturday.

This novel of the Roaring ’20s, set among the mansions of wealthy Long Islanders, features Gatsby, a young, mysterious millionaire with shady business connections and an obsessive love for Daisy Fay Buchanan.

Fitzgerald explores themes of materialism, social standing and the American dream.

SEQUIM — Tom Pitre will present “Small Business Backroom Management” at a meeting of the Sequim PC Users Group on Saturday.

Pitre will demonstrate how to market and manage a small retail outlet or home business, using existing hardware and free software tools found on your computer.

Harbinger Winery of Port Angeles will provide the wine. Homemade root beer also will be available.

The event will feature a silent auction with many local one-of-a-kind items.

GARDINER — The Gardiner Holiday Craft Fair will feature handcrafted items on Saturday.

The fair will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.

The fifth annual fair will offer gift items such as laser engraved puzzles, handwoven baskets by Pat, custom design jewelry and hand-tatted ornaments.

Silent auction set

PORT LUDLOW — The Community Enrichment Alliance will hold its annual silent auction at the Bay Club, 120 Spinnaker Place, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

The free celebration includes wine, appetizers and entertainment.

Attendees can bid on “ornate baskets overflowing with wine, crystal, china, boutique items, grand baby gifts, golf and tennis gear, garden ware, and gift certificates to restaurants, entertainment and getaways,” according to event organizers.

An art gallery with prints, posters and original art pieces is included, along with a Jewelry Shoppe.

Also on site will be a baby corner, donated furniture, boxed sets of golf balls, handcrafted fly ties, work benches and work stations.

Proceeds from the event will aid victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse and their families in Jefferson, Clallam and Kitsap counties.

Organic farming conference

PORT TOWNSEND — The Tilth Producers of Washington will host its annual organic farming conference at Fort Worden State Park this weekend.

Organic Agriculture: The Root of Rural Development begins at 4 p.m. today and ends at 3 p.m. Sunday, with 28 workshops throughout the weekend.

The keynote speaker will be Chuck Hassebrook, executive director of the Center for Rural Affairs in Lyons, Neb.

The Washington State University Friday Symposium, Organic Grains for Food, Feed and Malt, will feature sessions with growers, researchers, millers and bakers.

The conference is open to the public. Registration is required.
