PORT TOWNSEND — They selflessly help the needy, the homeless, disabled veterans and children, putting in thousands of community service hours without thinking twice or expecting recognition or reward.
Six community heroes were honored with the 2008 Jefferson County Heart of Service award during a luncheon ceremony that drew more than 100 to the Fort Worden State Park Commons on Tuesday.
The Heart of Service recipients, many with touching stories of sacrifice to help others, received framed award certificates, heart-shaped medals and enthusiastic applause from friends, admirers and associates.
The Heart of Service honors the dedication, sacrifice and accomplishments of community leaders and volunteers who have made a difference in Jefferson County, who have made the county a better place by doing extraordinary things for their neighbors, their community or the environment.
This is the third year for the annual award, sponsored by the Peninsula Daily News and the Rotary Club of Port Townsend (noon club), Port Townsend Sunrise Rotary Club and the East Jefferson Rotary Club.
A judging committee selected the six Heart of Service recipients from nominations made by individuals, clubs, churches, businesses and other organizations.
“They’ve journeyed. They’ve sacrificed. They’ve taken the risk and accepted the cost,” said John Brewer, PDN editor and publisher.
“These six are truly medicine for the soul.”
