PORT ANGELES — Street runoff from heavy rains on Saturday likely caused an oily sheen on Port Angeles Harbor.
The sheen was reported to the state Department of Ecology at 2:20 p.m.
Investigators concluded it probably was caused by oil and other contaminates in the storm water system being flushed into the harbor via Valley Creek from the heavy rainfall, said Ecology spokesperson Sandy Howard.
The sheen was about 200 yards by 20 yards in size, said Ian Banks, Coast Guard Group/Air Station Port Angeles operations specialist.
Howard said containment booms around the sheen will be in place until Monday in case any more contaminants enter the harbor through the creek.
The sheen is too thin to clean up, she said.
