PORT TOWNSEND — Admiralty Apartments tenants were evacuated as a precaution after a smoking oven mitt touched off fire alarms this afternoon.
A tenant on the first floor told East Jefferson Fire-Rescue firefighters — who answered the alarm at 129 Taylor St., at about 2:05 p.m. — that an oven lmitt had caught fire when he mistakenly turned on a burner unit on his stove top.
He doused the mitt in water and threw it in a wastebasket, said Bill Beezley, department spokesman.
By then, smoke had filled the apartment, sparking the automatic fire alarms in the building.
After evacuating tenants, firefighters set up fans to ventilate the building.
Tenants were allowed to return to their homes at about 2:45 p.m.
No one was hurt.
