Snow falls on both edges of the Peninsula — and some lower elevations in the midsection

A day that started with icy roads and ended with snow kept North Olympic Peninsula emergency workers and road maintenance crews busy Saturday.

Snow accumulation was at both ends of the Peninsula, with areas of Jefferson County near Mount Walker receiving up to 10 inches of snow and Forks receiving five inches by early Saturday evening.

Jamie Swift, a spokesman for the state Washington Department of Transportation said the department had 10 maintenance workers clearing roadways throughout Jefferson and Clallam counties.

As the weather worsened by mid-afternoon, the department called in its standby crews.

“We’ve had a few collisions, but nothing blocking the road,” Swift said early Saturday evening.

“We’re working hard to keep everything clear.”

By early evening, the DOT had issued an advisory asking drivers to carry chains when traveling on U.S. Highway 101 near Quilcene.

Swift said teams from other parts of the Puget Sound area had been diverted to keep the roads open in northeast Jefferson County.

The Washington State Patrol reported vehicles spinning out on slick roads, but no major injuries had been reported by early evening.

A handful of customers on the West End near the Lower Hoh River area lost power early Saturday night, according to the Clallam County Public Utilities District.

No outages were reported in Jefferson County.
