Snow in many areas of Peninsula this afternoon, evening

Snow mixed with rain is expected to fall this afternoon and early evening in lowland areas of the North Olympic Peninsula, the National Weather Service said today.

Later this evening, more snow is expected, although accumulations will probably be low.

As the altitude rises, heavier snows are expected in the Olympic Mountains. Here is the winter storm advisory issued by the National Weather Service:

A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM THIS AFTERNOON

TO 6 PM PST TUESDAY.

* TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 3 FEET ARE ANTICIPATED

LATE THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

* THE SNOW LEVEL WILL START OUT BELOW 1000 FEET TODAY AND RISE

TO AROUND 2000 FT TONIGHT. BY LATE TUESDAY AFTERNOON…THE

SNOW LEVEL WILL GENERALLY BE IN THE 3500 TO 4500 FOOT RANGE.

THE EXCEPTION WILL BE THE PASSES WHERE COLD…EASTERLY FLOW

WILL KEEP THE SNOW LEVEL AT THE SURFACE.

* GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THOSE AREAS EXPOSED TO SOUTH

TO SOUTHWEST WINDS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL

IS OCCURRING OR IMMINENT. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW WILL MAKE

TRAVEL HAZARDOUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST…KEEP

FLASHLIGHTS…FOOD…WATER…AND BLANKETS IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE

OF AN EMERGENCY.
