PORT ANGELES -Retailers across Clallam County reported healthy sales activity on the traditional first day of the holiday shopping season.
The first day of holiday sales was the best day ever for Gottschalks since it opened at 200 W. First St., Port Angeles, in 2000, said store manager Ken Porter.
Eighty people were waiting when the store opened at 5 a.m. on Friday, four hours earlier than usual, Porter said.
“We were very busy, in the early morning especially,” he said.
“We really took off.”
Swain’s General Store, 602 E. First St., Port Angeles, was busy, said Mike Mudd, manager of the store at 602 E. First St., Port Angeles.
“We had great traffic the first couple of hours, good crowd and good sales,” Mudd said.
The store didn’t rely only upon the traditional surge of shoppers on the day after Thanksgiving, he said.
It increased its advertising and promotions, including one that gave free poinsettias to the first 100 customers, Mudd said.
