PORT TOWNSEND – The City Council late Monday night voted 4-3 to support roundabouts at the Howard and Thomas intersections of Upper Sims Way.
The decision, after more than 20 comments from the public during a three-hour-plus meeting came with Mayor Mark Welch making the motion.
It was supported by council members Michelle Sandoval, Catharine Robinson and George Randels.
“On the balance I do believe roundabouts are best for the area,” Welch said after making his motion – one that came almost two years after Upper Sims Way study and decision first began.
Opposing Welch’s motion were council members Frank Benskin, Laurie Medlicott and Geoff Masci.
The council made their decision at the Port Townsend High School auditorium to handle what was expected to be an overflow crowd.
More than 60 residents showed, many to comment for and against roundabouts over traffic lights.
