Stand-up paddling topic of talk today

PORT TOWNSEND — Stand-up paddling enthusiast and author Rob Casey will discuss “What’s Up for Surfing the Sound?” today.

The talk, which will be free and open to the public, will be at noon at the Wooden Boat Chandlery at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., Port Townsend.

Author of book

Casey is the author of Stand-Up Paddling: Flatwater to Surf and Rivers.

His presentation will cover a brief history of stand-up paddling and will introduce a variety of ways anyone can get on the water using a stand-up paddleboard, also called a SUP.

The slide presentation will display images of stand-up paddlers in the Pacific Northwest from different disciplines ranging from surfing and racing to expeditions and paddling the tidal rapids of Deception Pass.

Favorite destinations

Casey also will show some of his favorite Northwest destinations to paddle a SUP.

He will conclude his talk with an on-land demonstration of SUP paddling techniques and a short on-the-water demonstration, if weather allows.
