OLYMPIA — State Auditor Brian Sonntag says he will not seek re-election in 2012, departing the office after two decades leading the watchdog agency.
Sonntag said in an interview today that he’s interested in remaining in public service but doesn’t know what he will do next. He said he felt like it was the right time to transition out of the agency and for new leadership to step in.
The Democrat has consistently won re-election by wide margins. He says he’s most proud at how the office maintained its independence and didn’t get involved in politics.
Sonntag reiterated that he does not plan on running for governor in 2012.
