The state of Washington won’t pursue the extension of a scenic byway designation for Highway 112 through the Makah reservation because of a lack of local support for it, said Chuck Owens of Joyce.
Owens is a leader of the Peninsula Citizens for the Protection of Whales.
The tribe might pursue a separate reservation scenic byway designation which only would require tribal approval, Owens said, adding he would oppose such a move.
The designation would allow the Makah to apply for planning grant monies through the National Scenic Byway Program.
