NEAH BAY — A massive slide has closed both lanes of state Highway 112 at Milepost 5 between Neah Bay and Sekiu.
The earliest that one lane could be open for alternating traffic would be tonight, said Larry Adams, maintenance supervisor of the Forks-Sekiu area for the state Department of Transportation.
He estimated Thursday that between 3,500 and 4,000 cubic yards of mud and debris had covered the roadway in the slide reported at 4:46 p.m. Wednesday.
Nearly 100 feet of guardrail was damaged in the slide.
The slide, Adams said, continued moving through the night.
Crews moved several trees near the slide because of safety concerns before they tackled moving earth, both by hauling it away and by pushing some over the side of the road that follows the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Kelly Stowe, Transportation spokeswoman, said the Makah tribe is providing a detour via a logging road that is for local traffic only.
