State Patrol plans souped-up patrols on Super Sunday evening

For the first time in the history of the world, the Seattle Seahawks are going to play in the Super Bowl of professional sports championships — Super Bowl XL.

And if you plan on going to a Super Party Sunday to watch the game, Washington State Patrol is recommending you get a Super Cab, or a Super Designated Driver, or you could wind up in Super Jail or perhaps even Super Dead.

State Patrol will be assigning additional troopers on North Olympic Peninsula highways Sunday, said Trooper Brian George, a spokesman for State Patrol.

The exact number of additional troopers has not been determined, George said, because like other people in the area, troopers want to watch the game as well.

But after the game, expect to see “extra eyes” on the road, George said.

Although Super Bowl Sunday has traditionally seen an uptick in the number of drunken driving deaths across the country, this Super Bowl promises to be different.

“Locally it’s going to affect us further, because our team is going,” George said.

On Super Bowl weekend 2004, 158 people died nationally in collisions due to drivers with blood-alcohol content of 0.08 and higher, according to a State Patrol statement citing national statistics.

That represents 51 percent of all traffic fatalities for the weekend.
