GARDINER — Security Services Northwest’s gunfire has led Jefferson County officials to issue a “stop work” order on unlicensed structures at the homeland security counterassault training center.
Jefferson County Department of Community Development officials focused on the Fort Discovery training center near the Jefferson-Clallam county line after a number of Discovery Bay-area residents complained about semiautomatic gunfire coming from at least two shooting ranges.
That drew county building officials’ attention to several unlicensed buildings and structures.
Security Services Northwest was established prior to county zoning in 1990, and some buildings lack building permits, planning officials said.
As a result, county Building Official Fred Slota halted use of three buildings and on Monday was working to identify additional buildings requiring permits.
In the meantime, the facility is allowed to continue training operations without the use of three buildings that house classrooms, officials said.
“It’s a matter of policy,” said Al Scalf, county community development director.
“If people construct buildings without permits, we put a stop-work order on them — it’s that simple.”
