Strait of Juan de Fuca: Freighter escorted to Victoria after large wave disables radar

A Greek freighter carrying grain was escorted to Victoria on Wednesday after a large wave knocked out both of its marine radar systems outside the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

The Tetian Trader arrived in Victoria on Wednesday night, said a marine traffic officer at the Canadian Coast Guard station in Tofino, British Columbia.

“A wave over the stern flooded one of their generator compartments, shorting out their switchboard,” the officer, who asked not to be identified, said.

Some reports indicated windows were knocked out, Fred Felleman, Northwest director of the environmental group Ocean Advocates said.

The wave occurred Tuesday about 500 miles outside the Strait, the Canadian Coast Guard officer said.

The National Weather Service’s marine forecasting office in Seattle said the wave was “not out of the realm of possibilities” during Tuesday’s storm conditions.
